Body Constitution - A New Health Concept

Professor Q. Wang

Health is a state of physical and mental harmony of different individuals in the life process with the environment, and good self-adaptive and regulation ability to natural and social environment. The new concept of health enriches the connotation of health defined by Western medicine and improves the understanding of health in the past, which provide the conceptual basis for further study on health medicine.

The Nine Body Constitutions

Due to inherited and acquired influences, each of us is unique with regards to our structural, physiological and psychological makeup. These individual influences combine to form the Body Constitution (“BC”) which determines how we live and behave, and the degree to which we are susceptible to pathogens and the development of disease. The BC theory relates each constitution type to disease and through determining an individual’s unique BC type, providing effective health maintenance and disease prevention therapies.

Generally, the BC can be divided into nine types, named as neutral, qi deficiency, yang deficiency, yin deficiency, blood stasis, phlegm & dampness, damp-heat, qi stagnation and special constitution.

Through establishing their BC type, people are empowered to take care of themselves with lifestyle modifications and/or proper dietary practices, prior to the occurrence of illness, thus ‘‘promoting health, preventing disease and extending longevity”.  Therefore, knowing one’s BC is one of the most important steps toward the promotion of a healthy physical condition and enhancing the quality of life.
